Gia and I sit in the lobby of the Clearwater Gazette building, waiting for a reporter who agreed to meet us here. It's been several hours since Luke disappeared. Honestly I have no idea what the next few hours will bring. While waiting, I've noticed this interesting wanted poster on the opposite wall from Gia and I that reads: WANTED FOR CRIMES AGAINST LIFE--ANNA "THE THREAT" THREAT. KNOWN TO FISH IN THE AREA AROUND CLEARWATER AND WILL SOMETIMES PURPOSELY TRAP DOLPHINS. IF SEEN, CONTACT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OR HANNA LEWIS (727-484-5094). $200,000 REWARD FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO HER CAPTURE. SHE'S WANTED WHETHER SHE IS DEAD OR ALIVE.
A few minutes later, a young Chinese woman enters the room and comes over to us. Gia and stand up and walk over to her.
"Good afternoon. Are you Jiyang?" I ask her
"Yes. Cypress, I presume?" I nod.
"And this is Gia." I introduce. Gia shakes Jiyang's hand.
"Yeah, come on back." Jiyang says. She starts walking a bit briskly. We almost have to run to keep up with her.
We reach Jiyang Wong's office just a couple of minutes later. It's not too big, nor too small. We enter and Jiyang goes and sits behind her desk. Gia and I sit in two chairs across from the reporter.
"So, what exactly happened?" The reporter prompts
We tell her everything that had happened earlier that morning. The boat ride. The fishing boat. The dolphin. Everything. Even Gia was able to give a description of the person on the boat.
"Interesting. I think I know who the person on the boat was." Jiyang says. "A mysterious evil that took the shape of a woman who calls herself "The Threat".
"Yeah, I saw a wanted poster in the lobby." I add.
Jiyang nods and then continues, "So, do you have a picture of your missing friend?"
Gia hands Jiyang a picture of Luke, Gia and I in front of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. "It's a fairly recent photo."
"Thank you. This should do." The reporter says. "Well, I hope y'all have a great evening. Incase I need to contact you again, where would I most likely find y'all?"
"Either at the aquarium or the Clearwater Beach Hotel on Gulfview Boulevard." Gia replies.
We leave the reporter's office and then exit the building. Hopefully, with Jiyang's help, we can get more people out there looking for Luke.
As we're walking down the street back towards the aquarium, Gia stops suddenly.
"What is it?" I ask.
"I...uh..I thought I just saw two girls run down behind a building over there." She replies. "But what was weird, is that they were dressed in what looked like gray and white wet suits and they were carrying some kind of sword."
"That is weird." I agree.
"Sounds like an X-File." Gia jokes.
I smile and then we continue walking back to the aquarium. Even though I feel like we did the right thing, I wonder if this publicity will bring about some kind of negative consequences..
...I wake up from the dream at about 7:35 am. I get dressed in a blue CMA t-shirt, my blue shark-themed swimming shorts and sandals, then I eat a quick breakfast (leftover fried catfish from last night), and then I ride my bike down to the docks at the aquarium. The aquarium is a large white and blue modern looking building. From the bottom to the middle of the exterior walls, light blue waves are painted. I meet Luke and Gia down at the dock.
"Good morning." I tell them. Both a pretty much in the same outfit as I am, except Luke is wearing a green rain jacket and green cargo shorts and Gia is wearing shorts with dolphins on them and a Miami Marlins ball cap. "Are all the supplies loaded?"
"Yep." Gia replies. We head to the boat. It's not that big. Just a medium size white motor boat that says CLEARWATER MARINE AQUARIUM on the side in blue lettering and is accompanied by the aquarium's logo which is a blue logo with a blue clipart-ish version of a dolphin tale in the center surrounded on three sides in white.. If you look closely, it also looks like a C is wrapping around the tail.
I get in the driver's seat in the boat and Gia and Luke sit in the seats next to me. Not only did I get a driver's license over the summer, but also a boat driver's license, which is very useful for today. About an hour later, Luke spots something in the water not to far away down the coast.
"Hey, look at that!" He says pointing at a large white object near the beach.
I stop the boat and look in the direction he's pointing. "Looks like a fishing boat."
Gia grabs a pair of binoculars from under her seat and looks through them at the beach. "Yeah, a fishing boat and a dolphin."
"Really?" I ask. Gia nods and hands the binoculars to me. "Yep, there certainly is a dolphin down there. Looks like something's wrong with the dolphin. Let's go check it out."
I start the boat back up and we head towards the other boat and the struggling dolphin. As soon as we're ten feet away, I see the problem. The dolphin is tangled in fishing line and a shark is trying to get at the struggling animal.
"I'll take care of the shark." Luke volunteers. "You two get the dolphin."
Before I can protest, Luke grabs what looks like a cattle prod from the back of the boat and jumps in right next to the shark, which happens to be a seven foot long tiger shark! Gia and I retrieve a couple of small scissors from a small black box in the boat and head over to the dolphin. We begin cutting the line that's on the dolphin. Unfortunately, the wake of the departing boat, the trashing of the dolphin and the battle between Luke and the tiger shark is making it really REALLY difficult.
"You didn't happen to bring your phone, did you?" Gia asks me. I nod. "Then get to the shore and call the aquarium."
"You sure?" I ask. "You know how heavy these things can get."
"I'll be fine. I'll drag him, or her, to the beach, away from this commotion."
It takes me a couple of minutes to get to the shore. The dolphin's trashing the wake of the now departed fishing boat makes it easy to fall. But finally, I get to the beach, pull out my phone from my shorts pocket (which was in a ziploc bag just in case I had to get into the water) and call the aquarium. "You've reached the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, how may I help you?" A Georgia-sounding woman says on the other side of the line.
"Hi, I've found a dolphin that's tangled up in fishing line and is possibly injured at Clearwater Beach just an hour south of the aquarium."
"Thank you. We'll send a rescue team right away." She says. I thank her and then hang up and put my phone away. I then walk over to where Gia has pulled the dolphin half onto the beach, but still enough of her (at least, I think it's a female. I don't feel right calling dolphins "it".) to splash water onto her back so she doesn't dry out. Minutes later, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium rescue teams arrives and takes the dolphin back to the aquarium so she can heal up. We head back to our boat, but that's when we notice something wrong.
"Where's Luke?" Gia asks. I don't know how to answer. I just look out to sea, probably with a puzzled expression on my face. One rescue mission has suddenly turned into a second...
The small Clearwater Marine Aquarium motor boat speeds quietly through the Gulf of Mexico. Gia, Luke, and I have come out here to look for dolphins. As the sun begins to descend, I spot something.
"There they are! Do you see them, breaching the waves?" I say excitedly pointing.
"I think I do." Gia replies shielding her eyes, squinting and looking at the direction I'm pointing. "Yes, I see them!"
Then I see a flash of white and silver on one of the tails of the dolphins.
" Oh look, it's Winter!" I half shout, half exclaim. Then Luke grabs a jacket from the bottom of the boat and puts it on. "What are you doing? No need for a coat. I'm going in."
"You sure?" Luke asks. I nod and then jump in. SPLASH! I can sense the boat stop somewhere behind me. I've never felt this alive and free. Oh look, here's some more dolphins. Misty, Mandy, Nicholas, and Hope. Wait, that one in front. Is that Panama? Oh, here comes another one. No, that's just a whale. Wait, whale? Nope, just an otter. What? I must be seeing things. Oh right, I jumped in with a seaweed blindfold on! But then how can I see the dolphins? Here, I'll just take this off. Yep, those dolphins I listed are still there. Wait, what was that? Is that a...?
Later, I get back into the boat. Since it's getting late, we decide to go back to the mainland. Within two hours, we reach the dock at the aquarium in Clearwater, Florida. The excursion was fun. We'll continue our adventure in the morning...
When an evil fisher who calls herself "The Threat" starts kidnapping dolphins, it's up to three young Arkansans to prevent Anna Threat from destroying the Florida oceans... Takes place in the summer 2015, between Dolphin Tale 2 (late summer 2014) and Dolphin Tale 3 (fall 2016). Dedicated to all of my AP Block classmates at FHS in the 2014-15 school year who loved hearing the first excerpt of Dolphin Tale 2.5!
I was inspired to do a full story when my friends in my AP Block class demanded a sequel to the short story I read to the at the end of the year, which was the first two chapters of Dolphin Tale 2.5.
I really hope you enjoy the story! Please comment on what you want to see in the story and if you want future Dolphin Tale stories (like Dolphin Tale 2.25 and Dolphin Tale 2.75). Again, thanks and enjoy the story, of which I will try to update as frequently as possible.
